Types of Vocational Education and Training (VET)

The Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector is a fast developing sector of education right across Australia. And whilst some States and Territories have adopted VET and integrated more into existing education (for example, school initiatives), others are still a little behind. What is clear, however, is that this sector is going to boom in 2003 and beyond.
VET provides experience and skills relevant to the workplace. It is being applied through schools in practical subjects such as Hospitality; through TAFE and tertiary institutions; through community learning providers and private colleges; and of course is very relevant to young people in business.
VET can offer hands-on learning to supplement more formal (degree) learning; or can provide a career jumpstart and pathway to a higher level of education, for those who have not attended university. It is useful to entrepreneurs as the shorter, and often flexible, courses mean less expensive and a greater variety of training can be undertaken. It is especially suitable for the technical training of time-poor young entrepreneurs.
Most, but not all VET, is accredited. This means that any accreditation you receive is nationally recognized. For an explanation of accreditation, see the article on this.

- Prior learning
- Time commitment
- Financial commitment
- Goal/objectives
- Interests and talents
- Skills your business lacks
- Availability of VET in your area or online
- Accreditation - your wants and needs
What type of VET is right for me?
Community Colleges
Also referred to as evening colleges, Worker's Educational Association and community/adult education centers.
What?
These learning institutions are incorporated bodies and not private colleges.
Where?
There is usually a separate college for each district/local government area. Rural and remote areas do not often have these.
How much?
Inexpensive courses. Check internet sites or hard copy brochures.
Time?
Flexible. Often evening or weekend courses. Online learning is unusual.
