The Average Entrepreneur

I came across an article in BRW (March 1-7, 2007) that details stats on the “average” Australian entrepreneur – if any entrepreneur can be labeled average. Some interesting points were:

- average entrepreneur is an Australian born male (just over 60%)

- more than 80% of all entrepreneurs are within the 30-59 years age bracket

- two thirds of entrepreneurs are running their businesses from home

- the most common level of education attained is high school or a trade qualification

So as us young entrepreneurs start taking over, we can start being the majority hey!

Let’s turn those stats around together!

Hi! Interesting stats.

"more than 80% of all entrepreneurs are within the 30-59 years age bracket"

The thing is, thats an age group of 29 years. Young people 14-25 account for only 11 years. Its still a very valid point though, and youth are disadvantaged. I would like to know what the stats are on a percentage scale that takes the span of age into account also. That would be very interesting.

Hey Davida

Yep young people trying to set up businesses are often disadvantaged - and I guess that is why most people wait until they are in that 30 - 59 year old age bracket! Would be good to see a more detailed breakdown of the stats - agreed. We are looking at doing some research directly into young entrepreneurs here in Australia to try to show the world how great we are.

I am a 40 year old trade educated entrepeneur employing 13 people. I started my business at 30 so fit your figures perfectly. My 15 year old wants to be an entrepeneur but I find it hard to put him on the right track. I have my trade and sales background and contacts gained in my 20's. How does a 15 year old get the experience and contacts required to make it? Where does he start? School pushes the kids to trades or uni and he doesnt want that.
